Maungatūroto Primary School Programme, 2022

In term 4 2022 Programme Coordinators Pat & Tracey worked with the three year 3/4 classes at Maungatūroto Primary School and their teachers. The programme included introductory class sessions, a field trip to the Wairau awa tributary on the Westlake's farm and an action day at Rural Design nursery.

During our field trip we observed a diversity of macroinvertebrates including mayflies, woody cased caddisflies, snails, damselflies and dobsonflies. We caught two longfin tuna and lots of common bullies as well. The ground was very muddy after some heavy rain the week before and we had a few sinking students! We were lucky to have the Ngā Maunga Tapu team from Te Uri O Hau Environs join us for the day and share some knowledge about the history of the area and talk about the mahi that they do.

Our action day at Rural Design was a fun day had by all. Activities included planting at the edge of the dam, potting plants with the potting machine, sucking nectar from harakeke, seeing baby tuna and potting a plant each to take home.

A big thanks goes to the Ngā Maunga Tapu team and Rural Design for supporting our programme delivery with Maungatūroto Primary School.
